When 60 year-old Sarah Thompson from Leybourne, West Malling, decided to enter the 2016 London Marathon, she embarked upon a gruelling 16 week training programme to mentally and physically prepare for the challenge ahead.
After taking up running in 2011, Sarah enlisted the help of The Oxygen Clinic for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) to boost her stamina and performance during her training and improve her recovery rate.
Since joining Larkfield Athletics Club, Sarah has enjoyed running competitively, including taking part in half marathons and marathons. Her last London Marathon was three years ago and Sarah started training for this year’s 26.2 mile race in January. Her 16 week training programme includes running four days a week; three shorter, six mile runs, followed by a long run on a Sunday morning, ranging from eight miles to 20 miles!
Sarah has previously been treated at The Oxygen Clinic for running-related injuries and visited The Oxygen Clinic to discuss how oxygen therapy could benefit her training and help her to stay injury-free. Following a consultation, Sarah is now undergoing treatment at the clinic. Sarah said:
“Initially I started having HBOT before each race and long run, but now I have sessions afterwards too, as the therapy helps me to recover quickly. I can sometimes feel weary with the amount of miles I am running, on top of working and leading a busy life – but after HBOT I feel revived and ready to go. I will certainly continue to have treatment after my training as the benefits have been incredible!
“I try and have one session of HBOT per week while in training, and I’ve scheduled three sessions during the week before the London Marathon to really give me a boost. Since HBOT I recover more quickly and my running has greatly improved. When I ran the Lydd 20 mile race, I was proud to win a trophy for the First Female Veteran over 60. I don’t overtake a lot of men when running, but when I do, they always do a double take after seeing an ‘old bird’ pass them – it is such a great feeling!
“HBOT is simple, relaxing and available to all. The team are all stars – I trust them totally and feel that my running wouldn’t be as good without HBOT to help with my energy levels and recovery. My daughter also uses HBOT and feels the same.”
Clinic Director, Debbie Griffin, commented on Sarah’s progress: “HBOT boosts the oxygen supply to the body’s tissues, helping muscles and joints to recover and rejuvenate quickly. Sarah is testament to how the treatment can bring out the best in a person’s performance and endurance. She is making great progress with her running and training schedule and using HBOT has really helped to enhance her capabilities.”
Sarah and her daughter, Zara are both horse lovers and are running this year’s London Marathon for World Horse Welfare.
